Pike Fishing on the Thames with Roger Wyndham Barnes

A friend of mine who is a shooting instructor recently invited me out for a day’s fishing on a boat with legendary fisherman Roger Wyndham Barnes on the River Thames in Marlow. Those that know me will say, ‘Mark, on a boat?!’ I don’t have the best sea legs in the world but this isn’t the sea so who was I to say ‘No’ to my friend. I’m not much of a fisherman myself but having grown up in Cornwall I have spent a fair few afternoons sea fishing off the rocks and piers with my mates so I was intrigued to go fishing for Pike in one of the most famous rivers of them all.

Our day started at around 8am when I was kindly invited for a full English at the Compleat Angler in Marlow, a venue I have shot many weddings at in the past but I never imagined I would be fishing one day in that stretch of the Thames seeing the hotel from a totally different angle and not a glass of champagne in sight!   After our delightful breakfast we met Roger in his boat aptly named the Compleat Angler on the river bank. We stayed within sight of the Compleat Angler hotel for the day fishing in the weir pools mainly  for the famous Thames Pike. It was not long before we got our first Pike which must have been the largest for the day at around 12lb. Well, with a mixture of expert knowledge from Roger Wyndham Barnes along with some good banter and plenty to eat the three men in a boat had a jolly good day on the Thames catching four Pike by the end of the day, and a few that put up a good fight and got away!

To find out more about Roger Wyndham Barnes please click here for his website or contact the Compleat Angler Hotel for more information or to book your breakfast beforehand!

Here are a few of my favourite images from the day. Oh and my dodgy sea legs? I was fine! 😮

URC gun dog tests at Shardeloes – the pictures are now online!

Here is a selection of the images from last weekends URC gun dog test at Shardeloes. Another fantastic event with a great number of entrants with people travelling several miles to take part. This time I opted to position myself on the river bank (well in the river really sitting on a damp log – ahh the glamorous life I lead!) in the morning to photograph the dogs crashing through the water. Well, this certainly had it’s challenges with the low light due to the tree canopy, it was not the best conditions to be photographing dogs flying through the water! But still, thanks to modern technology I have managed to get some great shots of some of the dogs whilst also getting soaked as they charged passed me.

To the competitors, apologies for not getting all of the dogs in the water but it was particularly challenging in the river. Also, sorry for not being able to photograph each of you before you sent your dogs to retrieve – I know this is a great way to reference your dogs when viewing the pictures but it was not possible in the morning.
Some of the water pictures may be slightly ‘softer’ then normal due to the low light conditions however all of them will be fine in the smaller sizes up to 12″x8″ If you would like something larger for the wall of your dog please check with me before ordering.

In the afternoon it all fell into place with good light and I was able to photograph each handler before the dogs were sent to retrieve the dummy. So hopefully any black lab owners will now be able to identify their dogs this time!

With previous events I have put all of the images onto this blog, however it can run a bit slow on some people’s computers so this time I have tried something different.

The pictures are now on http://www.photoboxgallery.com/marklord a gallery I have set up on a site with Photobox. Here you will be able to view the images and purchase them online direct from Photobox. There is a HUGE range of products available from prints to mouse mats and make up bags!

For those that require prints you are welcome to email me or call me with your order and I will order them on your behalf and have them sent to your home address. The photobox gallery will remain online for 4 weeks.

Some people last weekend asked me about a CD of the images of their dogs. I am happy to offer a CD of high resolution images of your dog for £70 or if you have attended other tests at Portman Burtley, West Wycombe and Englefield then I can supply you a CD of all of the images of your dog (s) for £120. You will have to let me know the reference numbers though!!

As before I am happy to offer the popular compilation of 4 images printed onto an A4 for £25 or the larger A3 with 4, 6 or 8 images on together with your dog’s full name, the estate name and date etc for just £50.
